Glaucoma FAQ With Olson Optical

Glaucoma is a condition characterized by damage to the optic nerve.  Many causes of glaucoma include elevated eye pressure. Because it may lead to compromised vision, your optometrist should catch this condition as early as possible and begin treatment.  Routine eye exams include a glaucoma test as an important part of the checkup.

Glaucoma Questions and Answers

Q: What signs or symptoms might indicate I have glaucoma?

A: Unfortunately, the onset of glaucoma often comes with subtle symptoms, if any.  Sufferers may notice slight deterioration of their peripheral or central fields of vision.  Other possible symptoms include migraines, nausea, the bursting of ocular blood vessels, redness, eye pain, and a rainbow appearance around lights at night.  Early detection can save your vision, so if you experience these symptoms, contact our office in Saint James, MN, for an appointment.

Q: How does the puff of air test check for the development of glaucoma?

A: Called the tonometry test, it is one of several tests conducted at optometry offices to check for elevated intraocular pressure.  The puff of air reflects back to a tonometer which measures your eyes' pressure.  Additionally, your optometrist can use specialized drops to dilate your pupils in order to look deeply into your eye and observe your optic nerve, checking for signs of deterioration.

Q: What can cause a rise in intraocular pressure?

A: Drainage ducts help flush excess liquid from inside your eyes.  These ducts may become blocked by deposits or by the iris if the pupil enlarges to a certain point. Fluid buildup caused by blocked drainage angles in the eyes will increase eye pressure.  Inadequate blood flow to the optic nerve might also contribute to high pressure.

Q: Can my vision be restored once it deteriorates due to glaucoma?

A: Unfortunately, vision loss from glaucoma is irreversible.
